The short answer
A 10 to 15 minute walk after a meal lowers the blood sugar spike that follows it. Even 2 to 5 minutes of easy walking beats sitting on the couch.
Dinner is the best meal to walk after. It's usually your biggest meal, and it's usually followed by the most sitting.
Why it works
After you eat, sugar floods your bloodstream. Your leg muscles are the biggest sugar users in your body, and walking puts them to work.
It's like opening a second checkout lane when the grocery line gets long. Same number of customers. They just clear out faster.
What the research shows
A 2022 review found that even 2 to 5 minutes of light walking after a meal lowered blood sugar compared with sitting.
In a 2016 study of people with type 2 diabetes, a 10-minute walk after each meal lowered blood sugar more than one 30-minute walk at another time of day. The biggest drop came after dinner.

The 3 moves
Move 1: Make it a family loop. Same route every night after dinner. Bring the kids, the dog, or your wife. It turns a health habit into the best 15 minutes of the day.
Move 2: Use the workday version. Five minutes after lunch. Walk the parking lot or take a call on your feet.
Move 3: Let it count toward your steps. A 15-minute walk is about 1,500 steps. Stack it on top of the rest: how many steps a day to lose weight.

Common questions
Is it bad to walk right after eating?
An easy walk is fine. Save hard runs or heavy lifting for a couple of hours later, or you'll meet a side cramp.
Does walking after eating help you lose weight?
A 15-minute walk burns about 80 calories for a 200 lb guy. Helpful, not magic. The bigger wins are steadier blood sugar and more steps without scheduling a workout.
Is standing enough?
Standing beats sitting, but light walking beats standing. If you're stuck at a desk, even pacing during a call counts.
