The short answer

If your waist is shrinking and the scale isn't moving, you're losing fat and gaining muscle at the same time. That's the goal, not a problem.

The scale only counts pounds. It can't see what changed.

What's actually happening

The scale is a headcount on a bus. It knows 40 people are on board. It has no idea 5 got off and 5 new ones got on.

Muscle takes up less room than fat. A pound of fat takes up about 18 percent more space than a pound of muscle. Trade a few pounds of fat for muscle and your waist shrinks while the scale sits still.

New training holds water. Start lifting and your muscles store more carbohydrate, which pulls water in with it. Recovering muscles hold extra water too. That's a few pounds on the scale that isn't fat.

The scale swings every day. Salt, carbs, sleep, and bathroom timing move it 2 to 4 pounds from one morning to the next.

The 3 moves

Move 1: Put the tape above the scale. Measure your waist every Sunday. Weigh daily if you like, but only trust the weekly average.

Move 2: Log your lifts. If your lifts go up while your waist goes down, you're building muscle. A notes app is plenty.

Move 3: Take a photo once a month. Same spot, same light, same shirt. You don't notice your kids growing until you see last year's school picture. Your body works the same way.

Common questions

How long can I lose inches without losing weight?

Guys coming back to lifting see it most in the first few months. As the early muscle gains slow down, the scale starts moving along with the tape.

Should I eat less to make the scale move?

Not if your waist is dropping. You'd be fixing something that isn't broken, and cutting harder puts the muscle you're building at risk.

Can men over 40 really build muscle while losing fat?

Yes. Research shows men in their 40s, 50s, and beyond still build muscle with strength training and enough protein. Here's how much: how much protein you need to build muscle after 40.
