The short answer
You can't spot-reduce love handles. You lose them by lowering your overall body fat: a small calorie gap, high protein, 3 strength sessions a week, daily walking, and real sleep.
Expect them to leave last. Love handles are the relatives who stay after the party's over.
Why side crunches don't work
Your body picks where fat comes off. You don't. When you work a muscle, your body pulls fuel from fat all over, not from the fat sitting on top of that muscle.
Studies back this up. People who did weeks of ab exercises didn't lose more belly fat than people who skipped them.
Side crunches for love handles are like washing the car to fix the engine. Nice effort. Wrong problem.
What actually works
Protein at 1 gram per pound of goal weight. It keeps your muscle while the fat comes off.
3 strength sessions a week. Squats, rows, presses, deadlifts, carries. Big lifts build the muscle that makes you look lean once the fat is gone.
7,000 to 10,000 steps a day. A walk after dinner is the most underrated fat loss tool a dad has.
7 or more hours of sleep. In one study, dieters sleeping 5.5 hours lost 55 percent less fat than when they slept 8.5 hours on the same diet.
Count the beer. Four beers is about 600 calories. Most guys never write it down.
How long does it take?
Months, not weeks. On a solid plan your waist drops about half an inch a month, and the love handles shrink with it. They're often the last to go, so don't quit at month two.
The 3 moves
Move 1: Measure your waist every Sunday. The tape goes right through your love handles, so it's the best scoreboard you have. Here's your target: waist-to-height ratio for men.
Move 2: Swap one ab day for a carry day. Farmer's carries and suitcase carries: walk 40 steps holding heavy dumbbells, rest, repeat 4 times. Your core works hard and you're moving real weight.
Move 3: Walk 15 minutes after dinner. Take a kid. Two birds, one sidewalk.

Common questions
Are love handles a sign of visceral fat?
Love handles are mostly fat under the skin. The more dangerous fat sits deeper, around your organs. The same plan shrinks both, and your waist measurement tracks both.
Do oblique exercises help at all?
They build the muscle underneath, which helps once the fat is gone. They just don't burn the fat on top. Keep a little. Don't expect them to carry the load.
Can I lose love handles without dieting?
Walking, lifting, and sleep get you started. Without a small calorie gap, progress stalls. You don't need a crash diet. You need to stop eating like every weekend is a holiday weekend.
