Today’s the first day of fall. The days are getting shorter, the slumps are getting longer, and the 3 PM coffee is about to become a daily ritual.

Here’s the loop nobody sees: caffeine hangs around for hours — roughly half of that 3 PM cup is still in your blood at 9 PM. You’ll fall asleep fine. But the sleep runs shallower, you wake up less recovered, you drag by 2 PM… and reach for the 3 PM coffee. You’re not drinking coffee in the afternoon. You’re borrowing energy from tomorrow — and the interest rate is brutal.

Nobody’s taking your morning coffee. We’re just moving the fence.

Move 1: Body — Set a caffeine cutoff at noon. Run it for two weeks.

Coffee, pre-workout, energy drinks, cola — all of it, done by 12. Give it two weeks before you judge. Most dads find the afternoon wall shrinks on its own once sleep gets deeper. The slump was never a caffeine shortage. It was a sleep-quality tax.

Move 2: Fuel — Replace the 3 PM cup with a 10-minute walk and a glass of water.

Same ritual, better inputs. The walk does what we covered in June — steadies the afternoon blood sugar swing — and mild dehydration reads as fatigue almost perfectly. Half the time the “I need caffeine” signal is really “I’ve been sitting for four hours and haven’t had water since breakfast.”

Move 3: Mind — Spend the first 30 minutes of daylight outside.

As the days shorten, morning light becomes the anchor for your body clock. Coffee on the porch, walk the kids to the bus, park farther away. Light in the morning makes you sleepy at the right time at night — which is where tomorrow’s energy actually comes from.

The takeaway: The afternoon crash isn’t solved at 3 PM. It’s solved at noon (the cutoff), at lunch (the walk), and at sunrise (the light). Fix the loop, not the symptom.

Where in your day do you faceplant? 11am? 2pm? After kids’ bedtime?

Forward this to a dad who’s on his fourth cup by dinner. His coffee isn’t the fix. It’s the invoice.

Rootin’ for ya,
