Here’s a number most dads over 40 are getting wrong by about 40 grams a day: protein.

Not on purpose. You figure you’re eating plenty — there’s chicken at dinner, right? But when you actually add it up, most guys are running on half a tank and wondering why the muscle won’t come back and the fat won’t come off.

The rule is simple: eat 1 gram of protein per pound of your goal bodyweight. Want to be a lean 180? That’s 180 grams a day. Most dads are sitting around 90–100 and calling it good.

Here’s why it matters. Protein is the only macro your body can’t store. Carbs and fat get warehoused for later. Protein doesn’t. Miss your target today and it’s gone — like a paycheck you forgot to deposit. You have to restock the shelves every single day.

Move 1: Body — Anchor every meal with 40 grams of protein.

Three meals at 40g gets you to 120 before snacks. Suddenly 180 isn’t a mountain — it’s a 60g gap you close with a shake and some Greek yogurt. The trick isn’t eating more food. It’s front-loading every plate with protein before anything else fights for room.

Move 2: Fuel — Learn your hand-sized portions.

A palm of chicken or beef is about 30g. Two whole eggs, ~12g. A cup of Greek yogurt, ~20g. A scoop of whey, ~25g. You don’t need a food scale forever — you need to know what 40 grams looks like on a plate so you can eyeball it for the rest of your life.

Move 3: Mind — Track it for one week. Just one.

Use any app. Log everything for seven days. Almost every dad who does this gets the same gut-punch: “I thought I was getting 150. I was getting 80.” You can’t fix a number you’ve never actually looked at.

The takeaway: Muscle after 40 isn’t built in the gym. It’s built in the kitchen, one 40-gram meal at a time. The gym just sends the order.
