When I asked what you actually want, about half of you said the same thing. Not a weight. Not a bench number. The mirror.
Here's the problem with the mirror. It's the least reliable instrument in your house. It reads differently depending on the light, the time of day, the shirt, and whether your kid just said something on the way out the door.
So keep the goal. Change the instrument.
Move 1: Body — Take the photo. Same spot, same light, same morning, every four weeks.
Front and side, phone propped against something, same shorts, first thing before you eat. You'll hate the first one. That's fine. It's a baseline, not a verdict. Four weeks is the interval where change actually shows up. Day to day is noise, and noise is what makes guys quit in week three.
Move 2: Fuel — Protein is what makes the photo different instead of just smaller.
Plenty of guys drop 20 pounds and end up looking like a smaller version of the same problem, because half of what left was muscle. Muscle is what fills the shirt. Forty grams a meal is what keeps it on you while the fat comes off.
Move 3: Mind — One number a week, one photo a month, and a standing rule.
The waist number every Sunday, same spot. The photo every fourth Sunday. And the rule: you don't get to evaluate yourself in a bathroom at 9 p.m. Those two pieces together catch the thing the scale can't, which is fat leaving while muscle arrives and the scale sits there doing nothing.
The takeaway: Keep the mirror as the goal. Stop using it as the scoreboard.
Forward this to the dad who checks the mirror eight times a day and has no idea whether anything has changed since June.
Rootin' for ya,
Jason from Dad OS
Want to like what you see in the mirror again? Start here.
The Lean Dad Recomp Playbook shows you how to lose the belly fat and build muscle at the same time, without living in the gym. It answers "where do I even start?" with three things: a protein number, a training plan, and a fat-loss pace that doesn't leave you running on fumes.
You don't need more information. You need the IKEA instructions, not the whole catalog.
It's built for a body over 40, not a 25-year-old's Instagram. And it doesn't depend on motivation, which is good, because motivation tends to quit by Wednesday.
