We’re halfway through summer. Good time for an honest look in the mirror — and an honest look at your numbers.
If the scale’s down a few pounds since June, nice. But here’s the uncomfortable question: down a few pounds of what? Because “lost weight” and “lost fat” are not the same sentence. Lose it wrong and you end up lighter, softer, and weaker — the booby prize of every crash diet. Lose it right and you look denser in the same shirt.
Here’s how to tell which one you’re actually getting.
Move 1: Body — Compare your waist to the scale.
If the scale’s down and your waist is down with it, that’s fat leaving — exactly what you want. If the scale’s dropping but your waist isn’t, you’re probably shedding muscle and water, not fat. The scale is a rumor. The tape measure is the receipt.
Move 2: Fuel — Check whether your strength held.
Are your lifts the same or going up while the weight comes down? Good — you kept the muscle. Are your lifts dropping right along with the scale? That’s the warning light. Strength holding during weight loss is the single best proof you’re losing the right stuff. Muscle is the thing you protect. Fat is the thing you spend.
Move 3: Mind — Set the August target now.
Back-to-school is five weeks out — the natural reset where everyone’s schedule tightens up. Don’t wait for September to feel behind. Pick one number to move by Labor Day: half an inch off the waist, or 10 more grams of protein a day. One target, written down, beats a vague “I should get back on it.”
The takeaway: Weight loss is easy to fake and easy to misread. Fat loss shows up in your waist and your strength. Track those two and you’ll always know which game you’re actually winning.
What food rule have you broken a hundred times and keep coming back to?
Forward this to a dad who’s been chasing the scale all summer. He might be winning and losing at the same time.
Rootin’ for ya,
